ALCOHOL ADDICTION

And HOW WE TREAT IT

What IS ALCOHOL ADDICTION?

ALCOHOL DEPENDENCE IS A CHRONIC ILLNESS THAT AFFECTS THE LIVES OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE.

Alcoholism impacts on every aspect of life; relationships, work, mental and physical health, social problems, emotional stability and finances. Not only is the alcoholic suffering, but the lives of the loved ones, friends, family and co-workers are significantly impacted.

The negative effects of alcohol use on physical health are mostly well documented and well understood now. Liver disease, gastrointestinal problems, stomach ulcers, gastritis and pancreatitis. Heart disease, weight issues, kidney problems, diabetes and stroke are also common among heavy drinkers. Alcoholic neuropathy is a condition that affects the peripheral nerves.

An individual affected by the ravages of alcohol is usually in the midst of a sad and lonely existence. The experience takes on a life of it’s own, at the outset it may be fun however, over time a picture of destruction emerges.

The urge to drink is powerful and usually responsibilities at home and work are neglected. At this point there may be failed attempts to limit the amount of drinking. There may even be attempts to stop, however the cravings and withdrawal usually prove too strong. It is important to note that withdrawal from alcohol can be dangerous and requires medical supervision.

Health, relationships and reputation can be damaged. When asked about drinking the response is usually avoidant or angry.

What ARE SYMPTOMS OF ALCOHOL ADDICTION?

Alcohol significantly affects mood and stress. As it is a depressant, low mood, lethargy and depression almost always coincides alongside alcohol use. Anxiety is also exacerbated with alcohol use, despite often being used to manage anxiety, ie. social anxiety. Heavy drinkers tend to become withdrawn, socially isolated, irritable and deeply discontent.

Symptoms also include:

  • pain or numbness in the arms and legs
  • muscle weakness
  • dizziness
  • difficulty swallowing
  • bowel problems
  • sexual dysfunction.
